A Brief History of The University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee was founded in 1794 as Blount College. In 1807 the name changed to East Tennessee University and in 1906 it became known as The University of Tennessee.

Many notable people have attended the University of Tennessee over the years, including Victor Ashe, former mayor of Knoxville, Madeline Rogero, the first female mayor of Knoxville, and Charles McClung McGhee, a late-nineteenth-century Knoxville railroad magnate and financier.

The East Tennessee Historical Society is also within short reach. Walk southeast on S Gay St toward W Church Ave and turn right onto Cumberland Ave.
