History of The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture

Ellen McClung Green and Judge John gave the University of Tennessee money so they could build the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture. The money was a gift in honor of Ellen’s dad, Frank H. McClung, who was a descendant of Knoxville’s founder James White.

The museum’s ceremonial dedication took place in 1963. In 2013, the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees voted to rename the museum to the Frank H. McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture. 

Visiting The Museum

The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture is located at 1327 Circle Park, Knoxville, TN 37996.

The museum is about 2 miles from Mast General Store, making it an ideal visit on a day when you want to do both a cultural tour and some shopping.

From Knoxville’s Mast General Store, take W Summit Hill Dr SW to S Central St and head northwest on S Gay St toward Wall Ave. Turn right into W Summit Hill Dr and continue for 0.7 miles on Neyland Dr. Turn right onto S Central St, then take the ramp onto Neyland Dr. Continue on Neyland Dr to Cir Park Dr and merge onto Neyland Dr. Turn right onto Lake Loudoun Blvd and then right again onto Volunteer Blvd. Once you have reached Air Park Dr, you will find the museum on your right.
