History of Ijams Nature Center

With a beautiful landscape located on the banks of the Tennessee River Ijams came to be from the thoughtfulness of the Ijams family. At the turn of the twentieth century it was initially called the bird sanctuary. In 1910 the Ijams family purchased the initial 20 acre parcel and it quickly became an outdoor oasis.

Unfortunately, with the death of the founders H.P. and Alice in the 1950s and 60s their daughter Jo picked up the reins and formulated a plan to turn it into a public park in 1963. Over the next couple years many hours were spent turning this dream into a reality with the final conclusion coming in 1968 as the Ijams Nature Park.
